  • What can Speech Language Pathology do for me?

  • Is Speech Language Pathology suitable for progressive conditions, such as Parkinson disease?
    Absolutely! There is research and evidence supporting the use of Speech Language Pathology intervention in progressive conditions. That is why it is often recommended by medical professionals and research organizations. The Canadian Guideline for Parkinson Disease recommends that every person who is diagnosed should have access to Speech Language Pathology. Research demonstrates that appropriate and maintained therapy has the potential to slow the progression of speech and swallowing symptoms, reduce choking and communication risks, and improve quality of life. Of course, individual results may vary, and they depend on a variety of factors. At SpeakSTRONG©, we provide individual assessment to determine which intervention(s) may be right for you and your goals.
  • How do I know if I need Speech Language Pathology services?
    We understand that deciding to pursue Speech Language Pathology services is an individual decision. That's why we offer a FREE initial consult, which provides you with an opportunity to ask questions and make sure SpeakSTRONG© is right for you. In addition, we will soon offer a FREE screening questionnaire, which you can complete online at any time!
  • Do I need to be referred by a doctor?
    SpeakSTRONG© does not require referral from a doctor. All you need to do is book an appointment online, and you're good to go! However, certain Health Insurance Providers may require a doctor's referral BEFORE your appointment in order to provide coverage. Please check with your individual plan for details, or visit our funding page for more information.
  • Am I covered through Health Insurance?
    The British Columbia Medical Services Plan (MSP) does not cover the cost of private Speech Language Pathology Services (yes, we're frustrated by it too). Fortunately, you may be eligible for other options. We recommend that you ask your Health Insurance Provider for their specific coverage options, and visit our Funding page here.
  • How many sessions will I need?
    At SpeakSTRONG©, we know that every client is unique. The number of sessions you need will depend on your goals, diagnosis, symptom severity, funding options, and individual response to therapy. We will be able to offer more specific options and estimated prognosis following your in-depth individual assessment.
  • What results can I expect?
    Reputable research suggests that appropriate Speech Language Pathology intervention can slow the progression of speech and swallowing symptoms, as well as improve symptom severity. However, every person is different. Results depend on a variety of factors, including your diagnosis and commitment to therapy. As with any health or therapeutic intervention, results should not be guaranteed. We always recommend discussing your individual prognosis with a qualified clinician.
  • Where does therapy take place?
    SpeakSTRONG© is proudly located at Parkinson Wellness Projects in Victoria, Canada. We provide services virtually through teletherapy to serve clients all across beautiful Vancouver Island and British Columbia.
